<image:caption>‘Fighting Spirit’ It was a busy start to the month for Spirit Airlines. Having filed its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in less than a year in August, the airline triggered one of the largest lease rejections in aviation history when it filed a public motion to reject 87 aircraft leases in early October. The ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) currently operates a fleet of 214 aircraft, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court later approved its request to reject leases covering 67 aircraft, a mix of A320ceo and A320neo models. Spirit had been under immense financial stress due to low demand, rising costs, the introduction of low-fare seats by legacy carriers, and capacity constraints related to Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issues, which grounded part of its fleet. Several lessors were named in the filings, including SMBC Aviation Capital, Avolon, Aircastle, Aviation Capital Group, and AerCap. In August, AerCap issued default and termination notices relating to 37 existing leases and 36 future Airbus A320neo-family aircraft deliveries scheduled for 2027–2028. A settlement agreement was reached in mid-October, under which Spirit agreed to cancel its commitment to purchase 52 Airbus aircraft and reject 27 leases with AerCap, in exchange for a $150 million cash injection from the Dublin-based lessor. For lessors, the ramifications of this case are considerable, with serious remarketing headaches and storage challenges as a result, not to mention residual value risks. Spirit’s actions may also set a precedent: with an already fragile ULCC market, lessors may find themselves on the hook for further lease rejections as airlines pursue fleet reductions and consolidation to survive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>TrueNoord signs milestone deal with Embraer for 20 E195-E2 aircraft Regional aircraft lessor, TrueNoord inked a deal with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, Embraer, for 20 new E195-E2 aircraft, with the option to purchase a further 30 aircraft (20x E195-E2s and 10x E175-E1s). This is TrueNoord’s first ever direct order with an OEM and is valued at $1.8 billion (firm orders only). With a current fleet size of just over 100 jets, this deal signifies a serious scale up for TrueNoord with brand new, more modern, fuel-efficient aircraft.</image:caption>

<image:title>Insights - Is luxury set to return to the skies? - Nostalgia As humans, we often look fondly to the past. We talk about ‘the good old days’ or say things like ‘they don’t make ‘em like they used to’, viewing the past through a pair of rose-tinted glasses. Pan Am embodies that nostalgia and is the very essence of a faded romanticism of air travel, when people dressed in their Sunday-best to board a flight. Now, it’s all about finding the most oversized, elasticated piece of clothing to lounge in. In an age of budget fares, self-check-ins, queuing like sheep on the tarmac, perhaps Pan Am’s return will offer the weary traveller a sense of magical possibility.</image:title>

<image:title>Insights - Is luxury set to return to the skies? - Visual Identity The Pan Am brand was defined by strength and simplicity. Its blue and white colour palette and distinctive globe symbol, literally opening up a world of possibilities, created instant recognition. From the flight attendants’ uniforms to the vinyl flight bags, every little detail was considered and purposeful.</image:title>

<image:caption>Wow, PLAY Airlines ceases operations with immediate effect September closed on a much gloomier note with the news that Icelandic low-cost carrier, PLAY Airlines was ceasing operations with immediate effect, grounding all flights, leaving thousands of passengers stranded, and over 400 staff facing unemployment. The airline lasted just four years but had been struggling with poor financial results and weak ticket sales. Last year, the company undertook a change in direction, revising its strategy to roll back on its transatlantic ambitions, ending all of its US routes in June of this year. This strategic shift caused a degree of discontent among some of its employees. It was a case of history repeating itself as PLAY followed a sadly familiar path, meeting the same fate as fellow Icelandic operators WOW Air and Primera. At the time of collapse, the carrier had a fleet of 10 A320neo and A321neo aircraft, six of which were on wet lease.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Turkish Airlines signs 225-aircraft order with Boeing Later in the month, Turkish Airlines announced it signed a mega deal with Boeing for 75 Dreamliners (50 firm and 25 options across the 787-9 and 787-10) for delivery between 2029 and 2034. On top of that, it also announced that it had completed negotiations to buy 150 737 MAX aircraft, consisting of 100 firm and 50 option orders for a mix of B737-8 and B737-10 aircraft. The order was first touted at the Paris Air Show in June 2024, so while this isn’t exactly new news, it’s been a long time in the making.</image:caption>
